(Fountain, Colorado) You'd think with a mere two rounds to go in the AMA 600 Cahmpionship that the co-leaders, Eric Bostrom and Kurtis Roberts, would be geared up, tense and under pressure to do well. After all, the 600 title could be the most coveted in all of motorcycle racing. The manufacturers take massive amounts of pride in having the number one plate in the 600 class, as being number one means increased sales. Both riders also have one year contracts that expire at the end of this season, and earning the number one plate means financial reward and job security.
Well...no.
"Naah, it's just another race," says Kurtis Roberts as he strolled the paddock, talking to friends."Of course I am out to win and I always do well here."
Roberts lead the most laps in last year's 600 race before finishing third behind Aaron Yates. He also won the 250 race in 1998. What does Roberts think the secret to his proficiency at Colorado is? "I think turn one being fast helps me, as well as me being good on the brakes.
Roberts's rival, Kawasaki's Eric Bostrom, trumped Kurtis' laid back approach by cruising the paddock on his skateboard.
"Eric is riding great," says Kawasaki crewchief Al Luddington. "From looking at the Brainerd tape I can tell he really is in a zone, riding very smooth but fast."
Despite their carefree approach at this stage of the weekend, the seriousness of the situation doesn't escape their teams. The Erion Honda squad and Team Kawasaki crew are going over the bikes with a fine-toothed comb in order to catch any possible equipment failures.
Stay tuned.
