Daytona test in steamy conditions
by dean adams
Thursday, August 17, 2000

Very little is known about the secret Dunlop tire test today at the Daytona International Speedway. Other than it is hot there--ambient temp is over ninety and the track temp is 120. These will be the most brutal conditions tires have to withstand at the Speedway because the temps are higher now than they will be in either December or next March.

Four riders are there, that much is known. Honda's Nicky Hayden and Miguel DuHamel are one half of the select squad, and Aaron Yates and Superbike champion Mat Mladin are the other half.

The riders will sort through new Dunlop tires to see what works well now, and those tires will be used at the Speedway this winter when the en mass test happens. Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and other teams will be invited to that test.

One interesting note from today's test. There is a 2001 Suzuki GSX-R750 Superbike there (Mladin is riding a 99 model currently) and it is being tested. Expect to see the new GSX-R750 debut at Daytona next March.
