The AMA Superbike 2001 schedule is at least three weeks from being solidified, says AMA Roadrace manager Ron Barrick.
"We're still talking with the television people about schedules and things like that," Barrick said, "and it will be three weeks or so before we're ready to release it.
Speaking generally about the 2001 schedule, Barrick said that some expected changes won't happen: Sears Point will still happen in the Spring (the event was canceled because of rain this season) and the off-shore race at Aruba will not happen at all.
"We're pretty locked in for the date at Sears Point," Barrick explained, "what with Vintage Motorcycle Days it's hard to move the date to later in the season. Aruba was hit by a massive labor union strike and the project has been forced to stop. It's off the 2001 schedule."
According to Barrick, Mid-Ohio's race will be a week later this year, and PPIR will be two weeks later. "Road America, Loudon and most of the others will remain the same," he said. "Brainerd ... we have agreed to terms but not a date yet."
What of the new Virginia International Raceway facility, will it be on the 2001 schedule? "Ask me after next Wednesday," Barrick said. "Several teams will be testing there on the 22nd, including Kawasaki and Honda, and Randy Renfrow. We'll see how comfortable they are there and make a determination then." Both Barrick and Renfrow are from the VIR area.
What of the Barber Motorsports Park facility, will that join the schedule next year? "That's not a 2001 facility," Barrick said. "They're still doing lots of work there, and I hope to get down there later in September to have a look. I'm excited about it, it has the potential of being the best, or one of the best, road courses in the US in terms of layout and topography." Barrick said that BMS has requested that the FIM give an official track inspection at some point to homologate the facility for FIM (WSC or GP) racing.
