Stan
Fox dies in NZ car crash
by dean adams
According to a Yahoo/AP news item,
motorcycle racing enthusiast Stan Fox was killed Monday night in a car
accident in New Zealand.
Probably unknown to the majority
of racing enthusiasts, Fox was a huge motorcycle racing fan, and if you've
ever been to an AMA Superbike race, you've probably walked past him. Fox
made his yearly appearance at Daytona each Spring, and also attended races
at Road America and Mid-Ohio as well. Fox was well known to many of the
insiders in AMA Superbike racing.
Fox was a member of the Fox family,
which owns the giant motorcycle parts and accessory company, LeMans Corp,
better known as Parts Unlimited, which for years sponsored in part the
Vance and Hines Superbike team, and sponsored Tom Kipp's privateer Yamaha
effort in the early 1990s.
Why the name Stan Fox rings a bell
with you: Fox was an accomplished car racer and finished a career best
seventh at the Indy 500. He suffered a huge crash there five years ago,
photos of which are quite infamous as Fox's legs could be seen dangling
from his smashed car as it slid down the track. Fox suffered major head
injuries in that crash and retired from racing.
He made a miraculous comeback from
that, and was at Daytona two years later, joking with friends in the garages.
Fox was 48.
