Motorcycling-Former Rider Faces Drugs and Firearms Charges

BARCELONA, Spain, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Juan Garriga, the former
250cc world motorcycling championship runner-up, has been charged
with drug trafficking and possessing firearms, court officials said on
 Wednesday.

The former Yamaha and Ducati rider, who was arrested by police in
May, has been released pending trial. He will make his next court
 appearance on October 19.

Local news agency Europa Press reported that Garriga was arrested
after a search in a Barcelona bar uncovered half a kilo of cocaine,
ammunition and 300,000 pesetas ($2,173) in forged notes.

A subsequent search of Garriga's villa revealed a revolver, two pistols,
two rifles, a shotgun, ammunition and a small quantity of cocaine, the
 agency reported, citing police sources.

A Barcelona bar owner and a waitress have also been charged with drug
 offences.

Garriga drifted out of professional motorcycling in 1993 after a
 successful career.

The Yamaha rider finished runner-up to fellow Spaniard Sito Pons in the
250cc category in 1988, winning grands prix in Jerez, Assen and Brno.

The following year he moved up to 500cc but struggled to make the
same impact, failing to win a race in three years.

He finished seventh in the world championship standings in 1991 and
seventh again in 1992, but dropped to 27th the following year as he
 completed just two races.

Garriga also appeared in several world superbike championship races,
 this time riding for Ducati.
