Anthony Gobert Post Race Daytona 200 2002

Q Anthony, it's quite a story here. I saw you in the hospital a couple of days ago, and it didn't seem like you'd be able to come out here, and here you are, and you raced the race and get on the podium. Did you think when you were laying on that bed that you would be able to get on the podium here?

A No. I was feeling pretty bummed out. I felt that I put so much into this off-season to have a good season, and the way it turned out, you know, I was a little bit bummed that I kind of crashed with my brother. But after, people were sort of telling me that it looks like I kind of more helped him than anything, because if I hadn't have hit his bike and pushed them out of the way, that he would've gone into the wall headfirst and the bike would've followed him in. So he probably would be dead right now. He's nearly dead anyway. So it really could've been a lot worse. That was a big positive that came out of that. I'm really happy about that. Then all of a sudden I started getting really, I sort of came good really quick. And last night I knew I was going to race. And then this morning I felt a bit stiff. The start of the race, I knew that that was going to decide how it went for me. When I holeshotted, and I was sitting at the front pretty comfortable, I thought, I personally felt that the Hondas wouldn't finish. I was really surprised to see Nicky finish, because the Honda's pretty unreliable. I mean, nothing saying bad about them, but all's they've done is sort of blow the engines up, and they've got so much power they burn the tires up here. So I figured between the engine and the tires, that the three of them wouldn't finish. But out of all three riders, I figured if anyone would finish, it would be Nicky. Because Nicky is an awesome rider. He knows how to conserve his tire. I pretty much knew in the second restart, when Kurtis and I were going at it, I could -- I know Nicky from racing with him now, and I know that Nicky was just sort of sitting back and seeing what happened, and I was hoping that Kurtis was going to crash or something and maybe I could start getting away. But it didn't really happen, and I ended up burning my tire up because of that, and I had to come early for a pit stop. And I lost about ten seconds or more. At the time I didn't really care, but then when you lose second by a whisker, I kind of wished that I had to come in a lap early. But then the guys said that if I had come in a lap early, then I wouldn't have finished the race, because the tire I had on at the end was really, really dodgy. So it kind of was a weird race for me, but I finished on podium, the first time I have on the Superbike, and that's what it was all about today, doing that for my brother. To lead was awesome. I can't wait til he sees the video.

Q On the final lap, did you know that Jamie was closing in on you?

A Yeah, I did for a while. I was kind of -- I upped the pace for a while, and that was when I started burning my tire up. And then I realized, I knew from the year before, that as soon as I pushed a certain amount, that my tire wouldn't do it. So I pushed as much as I could. I had a bad vibration going into the white flag. And I still was on. I don't care, I'm going. I did the best that I could, but obviously Jamie was quicker at the end of race where it was most important. I finished on the podium, that's what it was all about for me.

Q Have the doctors given you a prognosis as to whether you will be healed up by the next race?

A Yeah, I should be all right. No worries.

Q When you came in early for that tire, did you use the same compound?

A Yeah. Yeah, we did. It's kind of hard. Maybe we should've gone with a harder tire. But we stuck with the same one. It seemed to work really good, it's just so critical as to, you know, when you come off the corner the bike slides, and whether you really accelerate hard and spin it up or if you just sort of feed it on. When someone's chasing you, it's really easy to grab a whole lot of throttle, and I was doing that a bit. But Jamie rode awesome at the end of the race, and he deserves second.
