Five Things You Should Know About Gary Medley
... besides having the coolest sideburns in the paddock.

5. While some wrenches have only been around for the current era of fitting the hot parts sent in from Italy or Japan, Gary Medley's tenure transcends the days when teams made their own go-fast stuff. In fact, Medley's knowledge dates back to the original 1025cc Superbike era. The first Superbike Medley wrenched on was the famed 1982 Kawasaki KZ1000 S-1. Medley came up through the privateer ranks with Florida's John Ashmead during the 1980s and the relationship culminated in the last privateer victory of the Daytona 200 in 1989. Medley also learned under the famed Kaz Yoshima of Team Ontario.

4. Medley went to Muzzy with Ashmead for the 1990 season, but Gary ended up working on Scott Russell's machines with Vic Fasola after Ashmead was injured. Medley developed a fruitful professional relationship with Russell and went to Europe for Scott's WSC years. In four plus seasons, they won the Daytona 200 three times, the WSC Superbike title, the AMA Superbike title and three 750 Supersport crowns. With Medley in his camp, Russell beat Fogarty and to date is the only man to win the WSC title on an inline four-cylinder machine and the last man to win on Dunlops.

3. This isn't Medley's first go on a Ducati. Medley worked with Vance and Hines in 1999 and the Bostrom won his only-to-date AMA Superbike victory. Bostrom finished second in points to Mat Mladin that year and was on the podium seven times, including five second place finishes. By the end of '99, it certainly appeared Medley had an understanding of what it takes to make a Ducati go fast.

2. A middle-American kind of guy, Medley has roots in Ohio and Kentucky. That's important when a team is based in Wisconsin. He also enjoys fishing.

1. With Chandler, Medley also was acknowledged as being able to make the motorcycle work with tires that others had dismissed as too soft to go the race distance. He also has a rep as a no-B.S. guy with a rider he thinks is not performing up to his potential.
