According to Honda factory rider Miguel DuHamel, his father, racer Yvonn DuHamel, was seriously injured in a racing crash at Mosport on August 31st.
DuHamel was racing in a vintage race, and crashed in turn two at Mosport suffering a fractured skull and a broken wrist in the fall. He is still hospitalized in Montreal.
DuHamel described the situation in a phone call with AMA Soup today.
"Actually what happened is a guy who was following my dad said another rider t-boned him from the inside in turn two at Mosport. Turn two at Mosport, as you know, is a fast corner, and we think he landed with the bike on top of him. You should see his helmet: it's destroyed, with a big crack in the front of it, so there must have been a big impact. He has a fractured skull and has broken his wrist."
The elder DuHamel, pole-sitter for the Daytona 200 in 1969, is improving according to his Daytona-winning son, Miguel, "It was a brutal crash, he was in intensive care for two days and then my mom put him in a car and drove him to Montreal because she wasn't too happy with the hospital there. He's getting better. The doctors are amazed at how well he is doing and that he wasn't hurt worse than he was. He has no swelling of the brain, but he has some balance problems and some double-vision, but he's coming back. We see signs that he's doing better. He should come back okay."
The elder DuHamel will be 63 in October.
