Ducati's Loris Capirossi was fastest in the televised hour, shown on television in Europe. Capirossi won a new BMW for his efforts. Although he already led the session, Capirossi's spirited ride on his last lap bettered his time.

The Ducati MotoGP bike already appears to have the steam, pushing through the speed traps in Catalunya at 328.4 kilometers, or slightly over 203 miles per hour. Compare that with the slowest machine, the Proton two stroke of Nob Aoki at 288.2 kph.

The Aprilia team momentarily pulled out of the "event" after a Colin Edwards crash, believed to have been caused by a mechanical problem. Nori Haga was called into the pits shortly afterwards, then released by the team when his bike checked out fine.

Edwards is said to have broken his finger in the fall.
