Miguel DuHamel's long-time crewchief Al Ludington supports a move to 600 Superbikes and defends Formula Extreme in the process. The man who built the current points leading CBR600RR Formula Extreme machine states his case.
"Somebody needs to enlighten Mat Mladin in regards to the rule book," says Ludington. "FX bikes have a 350lb weight limit, 20 lbs lighter then a Superbike. If you don't think 20 pounds is significant in tire loading, braking and acceleration, think again. He states engine rules are wide open. False. Same rules as 1000cc Superbikes: stock crankshaft, air-box, injectors, valve material, etc. I think he should throw a leg over a 351lb, 140 rwhp 600FX machine before he writes them off."
"I believe that we'd take a second off the lap times with no changes to the bike if we had more and better guys to compete against. Keep in mind I'm not bagging on Mat. He just needs to get his info squared away before he states his case."
Ludington is a firm believer in the Formula Extreme to 600 Superbikes movement and thinks Formula Extreme machines could lap much faster with less rules. "I'd like to see a 320 lb limit in FX. This would promote materials technology and make tire life a no brainer. We typically race on the softest tires available at any given race track. As a matter of fact our tire life is so good that AMA tech has often requested to look at our on board data in the hopes of finding traction control as they say "there is no way a soft tire can look that good after a race without traction control".
"I've been an advocate of moving to 600's for a while. There are so many good reasons to do it, i.e.: market share, aftermarket spin offs from race parts, close racing, lots of guys that can hang on to a 600 for a whole race as opposed to only a few that can hang onto a 1000. Maybe remind Mat that our 600 was only 4 mph slower then his 1000 at Brainerd."
