Superbike Planet's Laguna Weekend Magnificent Seven
breakthrough weekend for vermeulen, bostrom arises

1. Chris Vermeulen, Ten Kate Honda -- The 22 year old doubled in World Superbike, clearly the class of the WSC field in his twin wins on board a private Honda CBR1000RR. Chris also worked his way back up in the championship, as he now holds third place just 14 points behind Ducati's Toseland with four rounds to go. The way things have been in WSC the past few years, it would be considered a miracle if a non-Ducati, non-factory rider could win the World Superbike title. Vermeulen is closing fast, though.

2. Ben Bostrom, Honda -- Ben amazingly won both the Superbike and FX races at Laguna and declared himself to be back on form; this after stinking the place up for the most part of two seasons since his return to Honda's AMA team. Ben looked like the racing hero who won five World Superbike races in a row in 2001, not the third Honda finisher in the three rider CBR1000RR Superbike team like he had been at every race this year before Laguna. It was an impressive weekend ... but was it enough to save his ride?

3. Tommy Hayden, Kawasaki -- Hayden now leads the Supersport points race by 22 after Laguna and maxed out in Superstock to close on the injured Jamie Hacking. Tom has put together an amazing run of speed and consistency, finishing on the podium in every Supersport race going back into 2003. His contract expires at the end of the season, so show Tom the money.

4. Roger Hayden, Kawasaki -- The Rog won the all-important Supersport race at Laguna, his second 600 win of the year and the weekend was another strong building block in a breakthrough 2004 season for Hayden. Roger's first win proved he can fight it out in a close battle; his second showed he can keep his concentration and the proper pace riding alone at the front.

5. Mat Mladin, Suzuki -- Mladin improved his points gap to ten in his quest for an unprecedented fifth AMA Superbike title. Had a red flag not flown just as Mat was putting his stamp on the race, he probably would have won. After taking it easy on his fragile clutch for the restart, he still closed in on Bostrom for the win at the finish.

6. Jake Zemke, Honda -- Jake rode like heck at Laguna, but had little to show for it as machine problems let him down. One minute, he was dicing for the lead in Superbike. The next, he was sputtering around in seventh after a misfire problem set in. In FX, he was running away with the race until his oil leak ruined the win. It could have been worse, had the red flag not flown and Jake not charged from 28th to third (!) after the restart.

7. Jamie Hacking, Yamaha -- Hacking looked to be whipped in his trailer on Friday due to his collarbone injury, and that was before his afternoon crash. Hacking rode one-armed to sixth place in the Superstock race. If the current points leader manages to win the title, his gutty performance at Laguna will be one of the reasons why.

Honorable Mention: Jason DiSalvo, Steve Martin, James Toseland, Miguel DuHamel
