Ducati's Technical Director Paolo Ciabatti was present at VIR this past weekend. He graciously agreed to fill us in with Ducati's 2005 yet-to-be-finalized plans.
Is the World Superbike team set? "No, we'll do it next week. We have a few things to consider. We know it is a bit late, so we will make a decision. We like the two riders we have this year. We have to decide some other things. We have to consider who we will send here," said Ciabatti.
Although this year saw Ducati increase their stake in AMA Superbike racing and Eric Bostrom won Pikes Peak, the 2004 season was something of a disappointment because Ducati did not win the championship. "We started so well in Daytona and we did pretty good in Fontana. We were hoping for a better season. The rider, tires, and bike were new. We had some bad luck here and there. Some places where not perfect with set-up or tire choice," said Ciabatti.
"The first year of something new is always difficult, maybe more difficult than we expected. We got a lot of experience. Hopefully, we can be fruitful for next year."
Will Ducati's American effort be a two rider team? "Yes, definitely," Ciabatti said. "I think the two-rider set-up is much better because you always can try more things and find the best solution. Both riders can have it for the race. Next year, we plan to be on two riders."
Rumors have linked a second Ducati ride to a European rider. "We are looking at sending a European rider, yes. Naturally he will have to learn the tracks, but it will be the best thing for Michelin and we think he will have time to learn the tracks," Ciabatti said.
Editor's note: Who will the second rider be? As stated in
this interview, Lanzi is under contract for 2005 and Ducati does not plan to race WSS next season. You do the math.
