Soup's Super Seven: Daytona '05
our list of who shined @ the speedway

1. Mat Mladin, Suzuki -- Going into the year, Mladin's perch at the top looked to be a little more precarious than in previous seasons. The Honda was the best bike over the second half of '04, Ducati hired Neil Hodgson, and teammate Ben Spies was lightning quick in off-season testing. At Daytona, Mladin and Suzuki proved their pace is still superior to anyone eles's at this point.

2. Miguel DuHamel, Honda -- Miguel won his fifth Daytona 200, equaling Scott Russell's mark. Duhamel added to his legendary racing resume.

3. Vincent Haskovec, M4 Emgo Suzuki -- Haskovec beat the factory boys in Superstock to take the victory and ran with the lead Hondas in the first 20 laps of the 200. The Czech-born rider really made his mark at the Speedway this year and if the Pirellis hold up, expect more of the same.

4. Tommy Hayden, Kawasaki -- Hayden's Supersport title defense kicked off the best way possible, a dominating victory. The new ZX-6R looks like a step forward and Hayden is Mr. Consistent.

5. Neil Hodgson, Ducati Austin-- Daytona could have easily been a "trap race" for the former British and WSC champ, since the track is difficult and the level of AMA competition is higher than your average national series. Hodgson was a clear second in the Superbike race and can build his championship hopes on a good result.

6. Ben Spies, Suzuki --Spies got a poor start in the Superbike race but was the only man besides Mladin to run in the 1:39s. He got a podium in his second Superbike race ... a good start for the year.

7. Aaron Yates, Suzuki -- After a disastrous 2004, Yates rebounded with a solid Daytona, second in Superstock (his focus for 2005) and a close fourth in Superbike. Counting out Yates this year would be a mistake.
