Suzuki's Ben Spies said on Friday that he thought a "perfect" lap at Fontana would be a 1:22.9. His time on Saturday? 1:22.939, breaking the lap record at California Speedway and good for his second career pole position.
"It's really hard to put a perfect lap without getting balked, but we managed to do it with just a slight mistake, maybe off a tenth. It was a good lap," said Spies.
Mat Mladin held the top spot for much of the session and was second with a time of 1:23.287. The six-time series champ said his lap times on race tires were encouraging and that he's ready for the 28-lap race.
