Ryder Notes: Strange Days Indeed by julian ryder

Heavy rain wiped out the one-hour MotoGP qualifying session this afternoon, a
two-hour downpour just before the second 125cc qualifying session dropped
enough water on the track to keep all but one of the two-strokes off track
and he crashed after one lap. Rain in the tropics is different from anywhere
else, it comes down in drops the size of baseballs and there was patently no
way the MotoGP session could start on time. A couple of hours went by and it
looked as if it might be possible to run but although most of the track was
easily useable there was deep standing water in several places. Race Direction
finally decided to call the whole thing off at 4.15pm.
Nicky has been using the bike he tested after Brno but is
starting to get a bit frustrated with testing stuff when he has a championship
to win.
That left them with a dilemma. The rulebook specifically says free practice is
not to be timed for purposes of forming the grid, but there's nothing in there
to cope with a cancelled MotoGP qualifying session. All Race Direction had to
go on was the times from the three Free Practice sessions so they was used for
the grid. Rossi was therefore fastest thanks to a spectacular lap on
qualifiers on Saturday morning. "It's a real grid, not a funny grid," he said.
Loris Capirossi agreed: "Difficult to take a different decision." The other
front-row man, Nicky Hayden, did mischievously suggest that it would have been
a better idea to arrange the grid in championship points order...
The riders had no influence in how the grid was arranged but they certainly
did in calling off the practice session.
All of which makes predicting what's going to happen on race day more than
usually difficult. Last year it was Capirossi who cleared off in the final
laps from Valentino Rossi with the second Ducati of Carlos Checa coming
through to take third of Nicky Hayden late on. Loris has done some long runs
on race tyres and looks comfortable, his returning team-mate Sete Gibernau has
been quick too. Nicky has been using the bike he tested after Brno but is
starting to get a bit frustrated with testing stuff when he has a championship
to win. Nicky's team-mate Dani Pedrosa is suffering with the gash to his right
knee, he did go out this morning but only did a dozen laps and was the slowest
man out there. Contact with the curbing gouged a lump out of flesh at the top
of his knee, so there's nothing to stitch together. Unpleasant and, worse
still, seriously bad for his chances of scoring good points this weekend -
which just happens to be the first in a run of three races on consecutive
weekends.
