Mat Mladin won his 52nd career AMA Superbike race in an exciting battle between Yoshimura teammates. Ben Spies was second, followed by Miguel Duhamel in third for Honda. Mladin's margin of victory was 0.116 seconds.
Mladin rose to third in AMA points with his win. Ben Spies still leads the series (with 71 points) followed by Duhamel (61) and Mladin (58).
Eric Bostrom took the holeshot for Yamaha. Spies came by before Mladin made his way to the front a corner or so later on the first time around.
Mladin and Spies had left the field, gaining around a second per lap on everyone else. Mladin took the laps leader point as the two ran in lockstep at the 2.38-mile circuit.
On lap eight, Mladin nearly crashed when he tangled with a lapped rider. His gap dropped from 0.75 to 0.2 after Spies caught up, but later he managed to pull some time on his younger teammate.
Mat chose softer tires but front and rear, while Spies took the harder choice on his GSX-R1000. It looked as if Spies was in great shape to make a late-race move, but was unable to get by. Mladin was able to make his pace last -- his last lap was a 1:25.020 -- and Spies could not find a place on the track where he was fast enough to make a move.
There were really two battles on the circuit, Mladin and Spies for the lead and Aaron Yates/Miguel DuHamel/Tommy Hayden for third. Yates led the fight for third much of the race but Duhamel earned his second podium of the year, 26.349 seconds behind Mladin.
With 13 laps to go, Luca Scassa retired, his MV parked against the guardrail. There were no crashes in the 28-lap final.
