The area between the turn two chicane and the exit of the Keyhole has seen a lot of crashes this year. One team manager called it "The Million Dollar Corner" because of the damage tally that was probably long since passed this weekend.
Some of the factory Superbike crashers in the area: Spies, Scassa, Duhamel (twice), Roger Hayden, Eric Bostrom, and Jason Disalvo.
"I've struggled over there," said Suzuki's Tommy Hayden. "I'm surprised I haven't joined the list. That part has been tough for me and a lot of guys have fallen over there."
"There have been an unusual number of guys falling off, for sure," said Honda's Jake Zemke." I don't think it's that slick. Given the lap times everyone's doing this year compared to last year, there's quite a bit of grip. I think there is so much grip that when it does let go, it's pretty quick and sudden. It's hard to catch those."
Aaron Yates has won three Superbike races at Mid-Ohio and has a great understanding of going fast at the track. "We're really pushing to go the times we are. I know I am," siad Yates. "The fastest times that you're seeing, those are the absolute fastest I can go. The track is fast and smooth. The texture is smooth and it doesn't give a whole lot of feel. A couple of times I had the front push a bit, you don't know it until the bites back, until the grip comes back. The area up there, out of two and three, it's real fast. You're on the side of the tire and the brakes. It would be pretty easy to lose the front there. I know I have in the past."
Some of the crashes have been caused by fluids on the track, including the two Yamaha riders at the end of qualifying. "There just were no flags or cornerworkers doing their job, same thing that happened all weekend," said Yamaha's Eric Bostrom. "There was water there and Jason fell in it too."
