Another One Bites The Dust
motorbike hang-out turns into a mall

Social interaction is a big part of motorcycling. Just about everyone who rides has places they like to go with their buddies.

If you live in New England, one of the fabled places motorcyclists congregate has been the Marcus Dairy in Danbury, CT. It was a local dairy with a coffee shop on the grounds and weekends saw many motorcyclists -- sometimes numbering in the thousands -- congregate to hang out and talk about bikes.

Kawasaki even had an official event at the place in the mid-90s. There used to be a giant mural of an ad shot at Marcus Dairy in one of the conference rooms at Kawaskai headquarters. It was one of the places to ride to if you were in New England and on two wheels.

But the old Dairy is being turned into a mall.

Soup contributor Bill Heald used to go to the Marcus Dairy. "You'd see bikes you you rarely see on the road," said Heald, who co-authored a book on neat places to see in Connecticut. "An old Matchless, the odd rotary Suzuki, or 'Water Buffalo', etc."

Heald said the Marcus Dairy scene was hot back before police checks made it a hassle. "The cool thing was, the Harley crowd, racer boys, and everybody else would show up and mix pretty amiably. It was pretty laid back with few real poseurs, until later. Good milkshakes, too."
