Where will Daytona 200 winner Jake Zemke be riding next season? Your guess is as good as Zemke's.
"I have no clue," Zemke said last night when asked about his 2008 plans.
"Maybe I'll fill out a Starbucks application," he joked.
Zemke won the Daytona 200 last year, has the last non-Suzuki Superbike win in the class (from his win at Utah last season) and finished third in the 2007 Superbike championship. It still wasn't enough for him to keep his ride. American Honda will field Neil Hodgson and (seemingly) Miguel DuHamel in 2008.
Zemke said that the loss of the Honda ride after coming through the Honda America farm system was a blow but that he's over it.
"I was shocked when I found out," Zemke confessed. "It is what it is. I can't complain for the most part about my time with Honda. And after about two days I was over it. I was like, 'Let's get something rolling for next year because I can still win, I can still make an impact."
Zemke and his management are exploring a variety of rides. Exactly zero of the current Yamaha riders have contracts for the giant tuning fork next season, Jordan Suzuki has a slot open and there is said to be a WSBK team talking to Zemke.
A rumor circulating on Saturday night at Laguna Seca was that with help from Red Bull and other sponsors that Zemke would be running his own Superbike next season.
Zemke said he hadn't heard that rumor and he hadn't yet considered that course of action.
As for his 2007 season Zemke refused to describe it as a year in which he was in a slump. "If you look at the data, we actually ran a lot better than the records show," he said, "it's just that we had some bad luck and little issues this season that really brought us down. Like (at Laguna Seca), we kept the blue boys (Suzuki)in sight for a lot longer than we did before. We had some bad luck."
