Graves Yamaha's Ben Bostrom is in the midst of a career renaissance after a few years in the doldrums.
Benny is currently sitting atop the Supersport points chart after two races, this despite finishing a close second at Barber to teammate Josh Herrin. Bostrom and Herrin went at it hammer and tongs with the victory going to Herrin after his bold move in dealing with lapped traffic.
But two poles and his Daytona win means Bostrom has a slim two-point lead in the standings.
He's looking more like the rider who won five World Superbike races in a row in 2001 than the rider who won two over a five-year stretch between and 2002 and 2007.
A big part of the mix is the new Yamaha R6, seemingly the bike to have in AMA Supersport this year. Bostrom admitted the years of losing had his game on the ropes and his switch to the Supersport class this year has rekindled his racing career and he's 'fallen in love with racing motorcycles again.' "It feels like we have the dominant bike. It just makes the racing fun," he said. "You go out there, and you know for a fact that if you're not up front, you were sleeping on the job. I haven't been on a bike this competitive in a long time. It's been a really long time. The last couple of years, I've been beating my head against the wall."
On the personal front, perhaps Ben is becoming a little more domesticated. Known for his near-misses while rock climbing or wild surfing trips to Mexico, Ben has spent most of his free time lately remodeling his house and working on his clothing/parts business.
