Clinching or Clenching? Superbike Championship Still Up In the Air
suzuki appeal causing delay

Ben Spies could clinch the 2008 AMA Superbike Championship this weekend, but we'll never know it until after the fact.

With just three rounds to go, Spies has a large lead in the points standings. Depending on how the Mat Mladin DQ appeal shakes down, the Texan's lead could be a nearly insurmountable points gap. Ben needs only to finish 19th or better to clinch his third straight AMA Superbike Championship -- if Mladin remains DQ'd.

However, extra time required for the appeals process casts a shadow of doubt over what is actually happening this weekend. Spies could clinch and/or Mat Mladin could set the record for consecutive Superbike race wins, but we won't know it at the event because of the appeal.

Usually when championships are clinched the AMA presents the rider with the #1 plate during the podium presentation following the race. AMA/DMG officials have told Superbikeplanet.com that there won't be a ceremony this weekend due to the uncertainties.
