Ben Spies looked to be in a comfortable place as the second Road Atlanta Superbike race wound down. He was in a comfortable second position and watching his teammate, Mat Mladin, control the race. Mat Mladin had led the race shortly after it started and had a 1.7 second lead on lap six. By lap eighteen, though, Spies found sixth gear and closed on Mladin. Then in a dramatic move, Spies blasted by Mladin, honking past him on the back wheel and left Mladin for dead. Then Spies pushed for his way to a one second lead and Mladin, who has won every Superbike race at Road Atlanta since September of 2005, had no answer.
Tommy Hayden finished third, Miguel DuHamel fourth ? just in front of the Yamahas.
Figuring that they would have no time to do so later, Yoshimura Suzuki broke down their hospitality and mechanic tents early this afternoon as they expect to have all three bikes in the tech tent and being ripped apart after the race.
Spies won the race by over seven seconds.
