James Toseland's 2009 season has been a painful one to watch for anyone who was a fan of his World Superbike career. Toseland's controversial move to team with Colin Edwards' 2008 crewchief meant he started the season wobbling and the oscillations have not been cured much since then. And this weekend at Brno may be the one where JT gets the word on his future with the team.
Rumors are as plentiful as air regarding who will ride for the Tech Three Yamaha squad in 2010, and not many of them have Toseland returning to the team. Current near baseless rumors have Colin Edwards II returning to the team for 2010 and being teamed with any number of different riders; his most rumored teammate this week seems to be American Nicky Hayden. Or Ben Spies. Or any number of other riders.
Toseland's first forays with the Yamaha-supplied team were so full of promise--remember the 'who is the A-rider, he or Edwards' debate? Only distant memories now.
While Tech Three is technically a French/European based team, what probably matters most right now is that their sponsor, Monster Energy, is a US-based company. Tech Three was given new life with Monster added to their sponsor list and there's no doubt Monster's rider wishes are somewhere in the mix. American John Hopkins' name is also being floated around as a possible Tech Three rider next season.
While the cloak and dagger move to secure Edwards' crewchief reveals some impetuousness, Toseland remains a talented rider. He could have any number of different rides in World Superbike if he desired.
