Italian media reported Tuesday that global sports footwear and sportswear giant Adidas will sponsor Yamaha Factory Racing and Valentino Rossi's new Moto3 team in 2014 and 2015.
The report didn't specify if Adidas would become a primary sponsor for Yamaha. The team has not featured a primary sponsor since Fiat withdrew after the 2010 season, when Italian icon Rossi left Yamaha for Ducati.
Apparently the Adidas deal focuses on the Italian market. Sky Italia television is sponsoring Rossi's new VR46 Moto3 team, and the sponsorship apparently will provide better visibility for Adidas ads on Sky Italia.
Puma is a clothing and footwear sponsor of the Italian Ducati team, so it appears Adidas is waging a new commercial battle in its longtime rivalry with its fellow German sportswear manufacturer on a new front.
