Moto2 standout Pol Espargaro may be the second member of his family to race MotoGP, as a German media report indicated Yamaha wants to sign Espargaro to a contract for the 2014 season.
Yamaha boss Lin Jarvis wants to sign 2011 Moto2 runner-up Espargaro to a "pre-contract," much like the Crossed Tuning Forks did with Jorge Lorenzo during the 2006 season. Lorenzo signed his official MotoGP contract with Yamaha in 2007 and debuted with the factory team in the premier class in 2008.
Espargaro's most likely destination in 2014 would be the Monster Energy Tech 3 Yamaha satellite team since Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi are signed to the factory team through the end of that season. Current Tech 3 team leader Cal Crutchlow is signed only through 2013, and he has made no secret about wanting a factory ride, especially after nearly signing with Ducati last summer.
Aleix Espargaro, Pol's older brother, has raced full time in MotoGP in 2010 and 2012 and will stay in the premier class in 2013 aboard an Aspar ART. Aleix Espargaro was the top-scoring Claiming Rules Team rider in 2012.
Pol Espargaro won four races and eight poles en route to finishing second behind Marc Marquez in the 2012 Moto2 standings.
