Moto3 stand-out Maverick Vinales' test at Jerez ended early this week when the very fast Spanish youngster crashed at the today in Spain and did significant damage to one of the fingers on his right hand.
Finger and hand injuries have long been the "devil's handbag" in roadracing. Famed American racer Randy Renfrow crashed in a test at Willow Springs in late 1990 destroying one of his thumbs. The late Renfrow made the gutsy decision to have the stump removed--and replaced with one of his big toes. Renfrow returned to racing a year later with specially made gloves and was quite competitive until his accidental death in 2002.
Vinales is out of the Jerez test but it's not certain that his injury will require surgery.
Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo lost part of a finger in a crash at Phillip Island in 2011.
