Toni Elias crashed in the Corkscrew just as the session began. He appeared to be okay.

Aaron Yates' Buell expired in a huge cloud of death smoke at about the session's half-way part. He was 25th fastest when it happened.

Long legs Davies was on a tear from the first moments of the session, lapping in the low 1:23s and sliding the big Ducati around Laguna Seca like a Daytona 200 winner should.

Leon Haslam has ridden off at the Corkscrew--overshooting the corner--a number of times today.

Marco Melandri's factory Aprilia stopped in the gravel as the session ended.
