Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa already had the fast time of this qualifying session and Marquez was attempting to knock him off pole when the wonder kid lost the front in turn one and crashed just as the last laps of the session clicked off. Marquez was frustrated but unhurt in the crash and will start on the front row.

Steely-eyed Pedrosa said afterward that Catalunya 2014 was an important pole for him as it was in front of his fans and family. Can Pedrosa make multiple laps of the circuit at race pace, though?

Yamaha's Lorenzo said he had a good race session in the fourth practice session and was able to translate that to a mistake free qualifying lap. He seemed confident and satisfied with his chances in tomorrow's race, suggesting that he has a "small margin" of comfort at Catalunya.

Marquez was attempting the multiple-bike attack in qualifying again when he crashed. He apologized to the team for the crash, said he braked too late and it was completely his fault. He looked slightly sheepish when explaining how his pole streak was broken by his own undoing, but, in the end, said the front row was good enough to help him fight for a win tomorrow.

Alvaro Bautista had yet another hard crash in this session and was carted off on a stretcher.

Valentino Rossi had a better final qualifying session at Catalunya with no "um, what are we doing now?" moments from his crew in the short last session. Rossi rode under the radar for most of the final session but was able to click off the fifth-fastest time in qualifying with only one Yamaha in front of him, but with Aleix Espargaro very close behind him.

Cal Crutchlow was spiked from the final qualifying session when he was unable to lap faster than Alvaro Bautista and fellow Ducati rider Andrea Iannone on the Pramac bike in the first "slow" MotoGP qualifying session.

Yonny Hernandez continues to impress on the previous generation Ducati GP bike. He's trying to use the Yamahas to draft for a fast lap and Rossi, repeatedly, would not allow him to do so in this session.

Various weather reports have it that it may rain tomorrow afternoon.
