Netscape co-founder, certified Ducati maniac and roadracing enthusiast, Jim Clark, writes in his recent book, Netscape Time: The Making of a Billion Dollar Start-Up That Took on Microsoft (St. Martin's Press), "An axiom of motorcycle racing applied precisely to the technology business: Stability is a function of momentum."
Clark is rumored to be on the initial list of buyers for the MV Agusta 750 gold edition. It's official: As leaked here weeks ago, Mitch Leonard, who tuned Tom Kipp to a 750 Supersport championship this year with Suzuki, has joined American Honda as Miguel DuHamel's crewchief and or lead mechanic, whichever term you prefer. Leonard replaces Al Ludington who went to Kawasaki to work with Eric Bostrom. Leonard stated late yesterday, "I'm looking for ward to it. I was hoping all along what Tom and I accomplished together at Suzuki would set the stage for something big next year and it has. It's going to be a challenge to work with Miguel in that he's accomplished so much and we'll want to continue that. I'm really excited."
Leonard, brother of Vance and Hines Ducati crewchief Jim Leonard and former wrench on the Vance and Hines Yamaha team (confused? good), will start twirling the tools at Honda on Oct. 18.Peripherally: Rumors are flying that Joey Lombardo, Ludington's number two at Honda and a man currently not under contract, will be joining Ludington and Bostrom at the green team. Lombardo was mostly in charge of DuHamel's 600 Supersport bikes and if you've seen the 600 all time win list, you know the guy knows his stuff.
But you're thinking, Dean, what's the big whoop about Joe and Al working with Eric at Kawasaki?
Consider this: every friggin' Superbike race that kid won in 1998 was with Ludington and Lombardo pointing him in the right direction, or vice versa. The results say those three click when they work together. Could be bad news for the competition if Lombardo breaks down the door at Bostrom's joint and says, "We're getting the band back together!".Yoshimura will test at Willow Springs next week. Yates will ride.
That quaking you feel in the soles of your feet is Matt Wait and company who are (reputedly) generally all bent out of shape at the AMA for not naming him Superbike Rookie of the Year this season, even though this was Wait's first season of Superbike racing.
According to the AMA they have a long standing policy that persons like Wait who raced on the world level before coming to AMA Superbike are not eligible for ROTY honors.PACE stuff: network will be ABC, not CBS as first leaked here months ago.
