Confirmed: Quokka Television Commercial for Grand Prix site features four-stroke sound effects
According to the hundred or so e-mail messages we've gotten on the subject here, the Quokka television commercial for their Grand Prix site features Grand Prix bikes with four-stroke engine noises piped in. Grand Prix bikes in the modern era (other than Honda's NR project) use two stroke engines, which have, shall we say, a very distinctive exhaust note.
Some are deeply disturbed by this seemingly ignorant of motorcycle racing-type mistake.
The most poignant note on the subject was written by Greg Talbot. He states:
"I've seen this commercial countless time on Eurosport and am dismayed at the ignorance of the directors. Seeing Alex Criville and Kenny Roberts (bikes) zoom by and sound like a GSXR or CBR makes me cringe. I wonder what NASCAR would do if a commercial appeared with, say Jeff Gordon and his car sounded more like an Indycar?"
Possible yet improbable reasoning: maybe it's a 2001 commercial, when Grand Prix bikes are supposed to go with real valve engines.
We tried to reach Nick Ienatsch, their editor, for comment, but all phone numbers we have for the Nasty One are no longer in service.
