AMA to announce double Superbike rounds in 2000

My sources say that the AMA will announce this week that they will sanction double Superbike rounds at three racetracks in 2000. Currently here is only one double round on the schedule, at the Speedvision promoted Road Atlanta Big Kahuna national.

In 2000, however, there will be three double rounds, as leaked here months ago.

Tracks that will have AMA Superbike races on both Saturday and Sunday of their 2000 event are Road America, Mid-Ohio and the aforementioned Road Atlanta.  All three tracks will have two separate Superbike races.

The promoters, AMA and series sponsor Chevy trucks are said to be coming up with something special for riders who score the most points on the double weekends, like Road Atlanta does with its Big Kahuna prize.

Superbike purses will increase substantially for these three rounds. For Road Atlanta the purse will be $55,125 for Superbike alone, and for Road America and Mid-Ohio their Superbike purse will increase by at least $15,000.

Other stuff: AMA Roadrace manager Ron Barrick is working on a replacement venue for the lost Willow Springs round. And testing at the mucho changed Sears Point facility, carried out over a week ago with AMA and AFM riders, is said to have went well.

More later.
