Vreeke writes: Then Wayne got hurt and we were all walking around like zombies the weekend of the race. People were crying openly and wondering why we were even there. Wayne, who was laying in a hospital in Monterey waiting for the surgery to stabilize his back, heard about the mood and sent us a fax. It basically said we needed to stop moping around and put on the best damn motorcycle race this country had ever seen, and we better not screw it up. We were floored that anyone could be so strong. He was more concerned about us and about the event than the fact that he would never walk again. That day Wayne Rainey became an even greater hero to all of us than he was before.
