Yamaha unleashes 2001 sport bikes
Yamaha sent us a few pictures of their 2001 sport bikes which feature new paint, updated graphics and a new "sport standard" model which throws new horsepower at the class.

Still the Mac daddy of the open sport bike class, by the looks of it, the 2001 R1 gets new graphics.
As well
as the red and blue designs, the R1 (and R6) are being made available in a limited edition "champions special edition"
color scheme. As well as the paint scheme, each bike will come with a special number plate. The color is described
as blue, but the photos we have suggest a more purple color - not sure what the bikes will really look like.
Both the R1 and R6 have a "dual bulb" tail light design to reduce both weight and size while providing excellent visibility.
Just what you needed to yank those last few mile per hour out of the popular R1.

Back for more fun in 01 is the perennial middleweight favorite, the YZF R6.
It gets new graphics and tail lights as described above. The R6's tail lights are LED lights, that practically disappear
when the lights are not on.
The image on the left is of those new tail lights taken with the brake light on.
The R6 also gets a new "ultra-sleek" tail section with a reduced drag co-efficient that is
supposed to add to the top speed of the bike.
The R6 is also shedding weight, the 2001 model is 5 lbs lighter than the 2000 model, partly due to new lightweight
forged pistons and carburized connecting rods.

Europe gets it and so do we-hooray. It's a hot rodder's dream: pry an R1 engine out of the sport chassis,
and grab the brakes while you're at it, and meld the whole works into a standard chassis.
Don't feel the need for the R1, but still the need for speed. The FZ1 joins all that wonderful horsepower in a daily-driver chassis.
Described by Yamaha as part cafe racer, part canyon carver, the only noticeable differences between it's engine and
the R1's on the spec sheets is the R1's 40mm carbs are replaced by 37mm items on the FZ1. We don't know the comparative
weights of the two machines yet.
We wonder which one is faster in the quarter mile, the R1 or the FZ 1?
