American Honda finished their Superbike testing at Daytona with slightly disappointing results. While the lap times were in the ballpark, the three talented Honda riders never asserted themselves as the ones to beat at the test. It certainly wasn't a disaster, but not up to their high standards.
"We should get our new bike soon. We have some work to do, no doubt,' said Nicky Hayden. "Knowing HRC, they are gonna go back and make some improvements. We've got some work to do and it looks like everyone else has done their homework. We gotta go!"
Last season, Nicky was in the 51s on the first day of practice in March. At this test, the Honda boys couldn't break the 1:50 barrier after three days of trying, despite the best efforts of their three first-rate riders. Poor surface grip after the rains and an uncertain set-up hindered them this week.
"That last time out was the best," said Kurtis Roberts. "I did my fastest lap when I was with Russell and those guys on the ninth lap of a race tire, and that was a 1:51.0 (Dunlop had Kurtis at 1:50.7). That was good for the race, per se, but Mat's going quite a bit faster than us right now, so we still have quite a bit of chassis work still. I'm not happy with it at all right now."
Other riders commented Roberts appeared to be riding very well, but couldn't get enough rear grip to cut a super-fast time.
