Turbulators
and Zig Zag Tape
by dean adams
The official
name for the tape on the Honda fairings is "zig-zag tape" and the product
is used in the aeronautical industry (at this point mostly in gliders,
it seems) as a "turbulator".
A turbulator can come in many forms,
but the easiest way to describe it is to use a golf ball as an example.
A smooth golf ball will not fly as far as one with dimples. The
dimples act as a "turbulator" and create a small amount of turbulence which
actually reduce drag.
Experts in the field could probably
whip up a 3000 word thesis with line drawings this morning which would
be more descriptive than the above.
Suffice to say the tape on the Honda
fairings is not simply a "sticker".
