A muggy, cloudy sky greeted the MotoGP grid for Indy’s race. Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo took the holeshot with Marquez and Pedrosa in tow. Lorenzo set out to try and break Marquez
Jack Miller crashed out of the race, unhurt.
Cal Crutchlow did score a good start but was suddenly back to 11th place early on then worked his way back up to finished eighth.
Dovi’ ran wide early on the opening lap and was pushed well back. He fought his way forward on the Ducati to finish ninth.
Rossi was pinched off early in the start but worked hard to stay near the front and pass Dani Pedrosa for third place with ten laps remaining. Pedrosa made the position back with five laps to go in the race but seemed to struggle staying on the racing line under braking and Rossi was soon back into third place. They fought over the position until nearly the end of the race. Rossi finished third.
“Very difficult race, very demanding …” said Rossi. He said he tried to break away from Pedrosa but was unable to do so.
Lorenzo led nearly the entire race but Marquez made a demoralizing pass for the lead on the brakes into turn one with three to go and almost immediately pulled a few tenths lead. Lorenzo was unable to answer. Marquez won the race seemingly easily at that point.
“A little bit the rear tire gave up on the right side. I gave all my energy to break away from Marc but he was too strong,” Lorenzo said.
Marquez said he was surprised by Lorenzo’s race pace but was able to push hard enough to stay with him, pass him and beat him.
Championship points:
Rossi 196
Lorenzo 186
Marquez 139
