Updated with Video: Rainey Rides 500 at Goodwood

3 times World Champion Wayne Rainey who was paralyzed from the chest down following a crash in 1993 rode his 1992 World Championship winning Yamaha for the first time in 29 years . Today at Goodwood Festival of Speed. James Wright. Double Red

Americans Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz and Kenny Roberts are at Goodwood in the UK for the annual Festival of Speed this week.

Rainey made a short run yesterday, and he and Roberts rode the Hill Course today. Rainey is riding a 1992 YZR500 while Roberts is riding an ex-Jeremy McWilliams Proton KR3 (that looks a great deal like the one he was working on in his shop last October).

Rainey, paralyzed in a crash at Misano in 1993, is riding a Yamaha outfitted with hand controls, no tire warmers and one employing the always interesting “run and grab” stopping technique by his crew. He seems to be having a fantastic time.

The concerned expression on the Yamaha Japan tech while warming the bike up suggests spare parts for the V4 two-stroke are slim.
