Wes Cooley (No. 34), on the Yoshimura Suzuki Katana, gets the jump on the field in the 1982 AMA Superbike season finale at Moroso Motorsports Park in West Palm Beach, Florida. Just behind him is Wayne Rainey (No. 60) on a factory Kawasaki. Then you see part of the stacked Honda squad that included Steve Wise (No. 38), Mike Baldwin (No. 43), Roberto Pietri (No. 88), John Long (No. 8) and Sam McDonald (No. 29). Rusty Sharp was also in there with a Honda factory motor. Who you don’t see in the shot is series leader Eddie Lawson. Lawson needed only a 14th-place or better finish and was playing it very conservatively, running 10th on the first lap, trying to avoid the Honda horde. (All photos by Gary Van Voorhis
